October 6-7, 2011 was the official date of the conference held in Bilbao, Spain, where maritime experts discussed challenges of the mariime industry and focused on three major issues:

  1. Maritime Corridors from Iberia to Northern Europe including Russia. Key steps to transferring critical flows to an all water solution.
  2. Maritime Emissions and Mandatory Energy Efficiency Measures for International Shipping. Key steps to reducing sulphur emissions to 0.1% by 2015 - this will have impact on all elements of the shipping business community including shippers, ports and shipping lines. Participants tried to quantify the real impact of this initiative on the end consumer.
  3. Establishing key steps to reduce road transpor flows between Iberia and Northern Europe by 10% by 2015. The conference participants attempted to quantify the flows that could convert to sea transport.
