“Ports in developing countries must invest in staff to keep up-to-date with technology.” This proposition is the basis of the cover story in Ports & Harbors, the official journal of the International Association of Ports and Harbors (November 2008). The NMU partners Professor Alfred Baird and Gordon Wilmsmeier, Napier University Edinburgh, and Professor Thomas Pawlik, Kiel University of Applied Sciences, underline this requirement in their article “Training for today’s port” (page 28-29). The authors describe the changes in the maritime transport sector: increasing global maritime transport, technological innovations, expansion of port facilities, and the key role of the ports in logistic chains as main drivers for demand of appropriately qualified staff in the maritime sector. Baird, Wilmsmeier and Pawlik outline approaches by example of shipping companies and ports. In general, the existing, new and significantly rising demand for education and qualifications has to be answered with offers combining the expertise of international universities and the maritime practice.
